Our Goldens Manager Rob Lumb reviews another excellent season in Division 2 for our O35 Goldens.
Time flies when you are having fun, and the last 14 weeks seem to have flown by! It feels like only yesterday that we were scrambling to get ourselves on the park after being given the covid go-ahead.
This year we welcomed four new players to the team, Ash, Paul, Ashkan and Javier, who all slotted into the team like they have been playing with us for many seasons! Great to have you lads with us!
With little prep or pre-season training due to lockdown… well let’s face it, training is overrated for the Golden Oldies anyway… the first 2 games of the season looked like it was going to be a very long 14 weeks. Two losses to start the season and somehow a couple of players short, even without international travel being a factor for once!
But from game 3 onwards, the team started to gel and each week worked better together as a team. We also welcomed back Alejandro just at the right time after Nathan had to withdraw from the season (and looks like retirement is on the cards) due to injury. Hope all goes ok Nathan!
Despite losing Nathan, Alejandro fit straight back into the team from his first game and Goldens were starting to put the pressure on the rest of the competition. With Earlwood and Marrickville pulling away at the top of the table, it looked like the race was going to be on for 3rd place with 4 teams in contention right until the last 2 rounds of the comp. With the same never give up attitude that has seen the Goldens finish in the top 4 for the previous 6 seasons, the boys went out on a high with a 3-1 win in the final round and securing 3rd spot… or as the words were on the day, “the best of the rest”.
Seven competitive seasons in a row of top 4 finishes and moving from division 7 to division 2 on the way. The best thing about the year… getting to play football with a great bunch of lads who are mates on and off the pitch!
Thanks for another great year in challenging circumstances and congratulations to all of you for your commitment, energy and enthusiasm.
Also can’t forget to thank Richie for taking on the coaching duties again & leading the team. Legend!
