Rangers A’s v Marrickville B WON 3-0

Goals: Nik Nurlan, Oscar Wong, Dan Wilson (og)

SRFC A’s enjoyed a great season in 2016, and celebrated in style by becoming the first Sydney Rangers team EVER to win a CDSFA Grand Final, at the club’s 4th time of asking.

Balmain Rangers As were the only team in all the CDSFA all age men’s divisions to go the entire season undefeated and clinched the Grand Final in style after previous close games with second placed Marrickville B.

Having drawn twice in the regular season and sealing a narrow 1-0 semi final win over their Grand Final opposition, Rangers were able to enjoy a relatively comfortable 3-0 win in the seasons showpiece, thanks to early goals from Nick Nurlan and Oscar Wong.

Rangers were tactically spot on and very disciplined in their approach as Marrickville never looked like being able to recover from the early goals. The Rangers defence stood firm against anything Marrickville had to offer and Rangers continued to have the better chances in the second half. The third goal put the game beyond any doubt as the Marrickville keeper made a terrible mistake to allow a cross from Dan Wilson to softly cross the line.

The final whistle sparked scenes of celebration, relief and pride as many of the clubs members and supporters joined together as the Rangers A Coach Ben Bagshaw and Team Captain Duncan Jones lifted the Division 6 trophy.

SRFC Club President, Joseph Roppolo said, “We couldn’t be prouder of our history making Rangers A team. Coach Ben Bagshaw and all the boys went the whole 2016 season without losing a single game including beating a strong Marrickville B team twice in finals footy on the way to lifting the CDSFA Div 6 trophy. They have cemented themselves in Rangers history as our very own “Invincibles” and a win for these boys is also a win for every Rangers player over the last 10 years of competitive winter comp teams with Balmain as each generation has built on the last.”
